Welcome to the CSTA Volunteer Spotlight series, where we celebrate the incredible individuals who dedicate their time and passion to making a difference in the CSTA community. Join us in recognizing the extraordinary work of Charlene in their role as a volunteer at our annual conference.

What inspired you to volunteer your time with CSTA? How has this experience impacted you?

I love being in the pulse of things. In the teaching moment. Volunteering as a scanner allows me the opportunity to hear different presenters and the impressive information they are sharing. In addition, at the help desk I get to meet educators from all walks of life and all parts of our country. I get inspired by their stories and love to encourage them to keep up the great work they are doing.

How long have you been involved with CSTA, and what motivated you to join?

I have been a volunteer since 2023 in Chicago. I was a presenter in Chicago…and I wanted to see what others were sharing. It is important not only to share what you know but to continue to be a lifelong learner. This something I encourage my students to be. I do this by modeling.

Can you share any memorable experiences or highlights from your involvement with CSTA?

Last year at the Vegas conference I was a volunteer at the help desk. I really enjoyed the conversations we had with the different attendees. I also enjoyed the teamwork and collaboration with the volunteers. Especially how the seasoned volunteers stepped up and provided support when I needed it.

How has CSTA impacted your teaching career and professional development?

Oh my. I am no longer the same teacher. I am a CS/CT integrating media specialist. The classed in media go beyond just reading books. We are decomposing stories and creating algorithms to recreate stories. We are combining robots to sequence the stories and creating short stories through peer collaboration. I would have known how to do any of these things if I did not go to conferences like this one and get involved. I learn something every summer and use in my classroom. I so appreciate what CSTA has done for me and my students.

In what ways do you see CSTA shaping the future of computer science education?

CSTA is already and will continue to be a resource for preparing teachers to teach CS, integrate CS/CT and grow their overall pedagogical practice. They will keep us update with the latest educational technologies. Computer science and Computational Thinking is THE FUTURE. CSTA is leading the way in preparing us for work.

Are there any specific initiatives or projects within CSTA that you’ve been particularly passionate about?

Equity- I am on the advocacy committee in my home chapter Maryland. I am passionate about making sure that all grade levels get what they need to succeed in the 21st work environment. I am especially focused on the PK-5 grade levels. These young students need a strong CS/CT foundation to move on an up to the grade levels….and on to successful careers.

What does the future of CSTA look like?

Educating…Preparing…Motivating… EDUCATORS and ALL other stakeholders so they in turn can educate….prepare…and motivate our students.
