My CSTA Story

Computer science had always been an interest of Krystal’s, starting during the MySpace days when she taught herself how to update her profile with “exclusive” glitter GIFs by backward engineering HTML. Years later when given the opportunity to teach computer science alongside her science courses, she found herself looking for a community of other educators to learn from and grow with. On a whim, she applied for and received a CSTA conference scholarship, and attended the Chicago conference in 2022, learned about the Equity Fellowship, and her life was changed! Through her work in the Equity Fellowship, she was inspired to serve as a chapter leader and began to build a community of CS educators across her state.

My Story

Before joining CSTA, Krystal worked in education for over 15 years, supporting the teaching and learning of educators and students. As an Instructional Technology Facilitator in the Jackson Public School District, she collaborated with PK-12 educators to integrate technology into pedagogical practices. Before that, she taught Computer Science, Biology, and Physical Science in middle and high school. In addition to her work in K-12 education, she also taught post-graduates in a state-wide coding school.

Krystal serves on the EngageAI Practitioner Advisory Board, CSTA-Mississippi Chapter President, and is a 2022-2023 Equity Fellow. Through these leadership opportunities, she has advocated for an equitable, student-centered approach to STEM education.
