The Cultivating a Community of Learners Summit, set for Sept. 18, contained sessions aligned to Standard 5. Classroom Practice from the CSTA Standards for CS Teachers.
Effective CS teachers are responsive classroom practitioners who implement evidence-based pedagogy to facilitate meaningful experiences and produce empowered learners of CS.
We’ve compiled a list of recommendations that align with each indicator of this standard to help you get started on planning your summit experience:

5a. Use inquiry to facilitate student learning

Teaching programming using the PRIMM approach 
Session presented by Sue Sentance and Martin O’Hanlon, at 12:45 p.m. ET. 
Learn to use PRIMM to keep students engaged in programming lessons and encourage peer-peer discussions about code.

5b. Cultivate a positive classroom climate

Creating an authentic learning environment
Session presented by Mariana Hernandez, at 3:20 p.m. ET. 

They don’t care what you know until they know you care! Empowering students to be independent learners, take risks, and make mistakes.

5c. Promote student self-efficacy

Get Agile with Creative Computing 
Session presented by Abigail Joseph, at 2:20 p.m. ET 
Use the agile framework to encourage student self-efficacy, collaboration, and communication in a creative computing classroom.

5d. Support student collaboration

Collaborating in Computing: Pair Programming Strategies 
Session presented by Erin Asamoto and Shannon Campe, at 12:40 p.m. ET. 

This session will cover the what, when, why, and how’s of getting the most out of pair programming with students.

5e. Encourage student communication

Scaffolding Classroom Discussions 
Session presented by Clif Kussmaul and Helen Hu, at 3:20 p.m. ET. 
Use scaffolded discussions to engage students, develop insights, and enhance learning in both online and face-to-face classroom settings.

5f. Guide students’ use of feedback

Formative Feedback, Making it Count 
Presented by Kelly Powers, Shuchi Grover, and Vicky Sedgwick, at 2:20 p.m ET. 
Making feedback count includes students receiving feedback from each other and their teachers and then taking immediate action. Explore how!
