What inspired you to volunteer your time with CSTA? How has this experience impacted you?

My journey into the realm of computer science has been nothing short of fascinating. Ever since I was seven years old, I found myself drawn to computers and technology. The endless possibilities and the power of innovation that computer science offers have always intrigued me. It’s not just about coding or programming; it’s about problem-solving, creativity, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

However, my passion for computer science goes beyond personal interest. I firmly believe in the principle of “computer science for all.” In today’s digital age, understanding computer science is becoming increasingly essential for individuals from all walks of life. It empowers people to navigate the complexities of the modern world and opens doors to countless opportunities.

Moreover, I am deeply committed to community involvement in education. Education is the cornerstone of progress, and by actively participating in initiatives like the CSTA, I aim to contribute to the growth and development of future generations. Volunteering with the CSTA allows me to combine my passion for computer science with my desire to make a meaningful impact in education.

In conclusion, my decision to volunteer with the CSTA is driven by my passion for computer science for all and my belief in the importance of community involvement in education. I am excited about the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded individuals and make a difference in the lives of students and educators.

How long have you been involved with CSTA, and what motivated you to join?

Since 2015, I’ve held the esteemed position of a founding member of the CSTA Nevada Silver State chapter. Throughout these years, I’ve been dedicated to fostering computer science education in our state. Additionally, I’ve proudly served on the board, contributing to the strategic direction and initiatives of our chapter. My involvement extends beyond the state level as well, as I’m honored to be part of the National Conference Committee. This role allows me to collaborate with educators from across the country, sharing insights and best practices to advance computer science education on a broader scale.

Can you share any memorable experiences or highlights from your involvement with CSTA?

Meeting a representative from Skill Struck at a CSTA event was a pivotal moment for me. Skill Struck’s commitment to leveraging AI for enhancing K-12 education resonated deeply with my own passion for education and technology. Inspired by our conversation, I delved deeper into the possibilities of AI in education and began to explore avenues for integrating it into classroom practices.

As I became more immersed in this journey, I found myself increasingly drawn to the intersection of AI and education, leading me to present about AI in education at various conferences and events. Through these presentations, I aimed to share insights, spark discussions, and inspire fellow educators to embrace the transformative potential of AI in shaping the future of education.

How has CSTA impacted your teaching career and professional development?

My dedication and enthusiasm for AI in education caught the attention of Skill Struck, and they invited me to join them as an AI education representative. In this role, I have the opportunity to collaborate with educators, school districts, and policymakers to promote the responsible and effective use of AI in K-12 education, ensuring that all students have access to innovative learning experiences that prepare them for the challenges of tomorrow.

In what ways do you see CSTA shaping the future of computer science education?

Firstly, CSTA is actively updating and revising K-12 computer science standards. By investing $1.6 million in this endeavor, CSTA aims to ensure that these standards are aligned with the evolving landscape of technology and education. This initiative is crucial in providing a solid foundation for computer science education across the nation, preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of the digital age.

Are there any specific initiatives or projects within CSTA that you’ve been particularly passionate about?:

I am very passionate about the CSTA conference committee and networking.

What does the future of CSTA look like?

CSTA recognizes the importance of educators, particularly CS teachers, in guiding students through the complexities of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). By equipping teachers with the necessary resources, training, and support, CSTA empowers them to effectively integrate AI education into their curriculum, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and ethical considerations among students.
