Addressing Harm, Bias, and Privacy in AI Implementation

This session will use Kapor Center’s Responsible AI and Tech Justice: A Guide for K-12 Education to discuss harm, bias, and privacy issues that may arise from the use of AI and GenAI implementation in K-12 schools.
The Important Role Social Capital Plays in Navigating the CS Ecosystem for Black Girls

After three years in the making, the Code Next team recently released a new Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) paper exploring how the Google Code Next program built young Black women’s social capital and contributed to their persistence in STEM. The paper, written in conjunction with our external evaluator Education Development Center (EDC) is now available. This talk will provide an overview of the Code Next program and our findings. Note: Social capital refers to the supportive resources embedded within relationships that help individuals navigate the world and overcome challenges.
Unleash your flame with Equity Fireside Chats
Presented by Sandra Hartman and Nicole Bond from 2:05 – 2:35 p.m. ET
Unleash your flame by learning how you can host Equity Fireside Chats with Equity fellow alum and equity council member Sandra Hartman and her fellow Chapter leader Nicole Bond. Attendees will hear their chapter’s journey to create and present an equity fireside chat. Topics and brainstorming sessions will be discussed as well as other chapter logistics.
Code without Borders: Redefining CS for ALL
Presented by Daa’iyah Cooke and Lisa Moe from 2:05 – 2:35 p.m. ET
This session will challenge the status quo by addressing the equity gap in computer science head-on. Together, we will define what “CS for All” means by examining successful models and innovative tools that are making CS education accessible to all stakeholders.
Harmony in Homogeneity: Nurturing Diversity in Less Diverse Spaces
Presented by Michelle Meier, Jen Styer, and Jigar Patel from 3:40 – 4:10 p.m. ET
This session will provide considerations and ideas for cultivating an inclusive culture in less diverse spaces, honoring not just those who are in the room, but helping students understand the diversity outside of their doors to better prepare them to be universal creators.
Why leadership matters
Presented by Kip Glazer from 3:40 – 4:10 p.m. ET
This session will focus on the challenges of creating equitable school environment when it comes to guaranteeing access to CS education. The session will focus on practical examples of the questions from the teachers and how to respond to them. It will also share additional information regarding how to engage various stakeholders as we continue to work on providing equitable access to all students.
